SMTP (Port 25) Restriction Details

Sun Country Cablevision's Sunwave Cable Internet Service ("Sunwave") has introduced Port 25 filtering to reduce the volume of unsolicited bulk email (SPAM) on our network.

Sunwave is committed to being a good "netizen" and makes every effort to protect our customers while providing a connection to the Internet that is as transparent and easy to use as possible.  We are also very conscious of how our network affects other people out on the Internet. It is with these three aims in mind that we have decided to begin filtering port 25 traffic across our network.

Will the Port 25 Filter Affect You?

This change will go largely unnoticed by the vast majority of our customers and will require no changes to how you currently use email. If you fit into one of the following categories you don't have to do anything:
  • You have a sunwave.net, sunlite.ca or shuswap.net email address
  • You host your website and email with Sunwave
  • You have a webmail account with a service such as hotmail, yahoo mail or gmail
  • You are a business customer with your own mailserver and you have a static IP.  Our business packages are "Business", "Professional" and "Corporate"

You may need to make some simple changes if you do not fit into one of the above categories.  Here are some possible scenarios:

In either case, you will need to make one of the following three changes:
  • Use mail.sunwave.net as your outbound mail server
  • Obtain an alternate port number from your third-party email provider
  • Subscribe to Sunwave's Business, Professional or Corporate Internet services using a static IP address and DOCSIS modem
