Setting up email
in Outlook Express
Points to know before starting:
- Email
addresses
consist of two parts separated by an @ sign. The first part
is the user name, such as "johnsmith". The second part is
the
domain name, such as "sunwave.net". Put the two together and
you have the email address johnsmith@sunwave.net. Since
Suncountry Cablevision hosts numerous domains, this is information will
be important for setting up your email account.
- During setup,
you will be asked for some information about your servers.
The server is a pop3 server and the server names for both the incoming
(pop3) and the outgoing (smtp) are mail.<domain
name>. In the case of johnsmith@sunwave.net, he would
use mail.sunwave.net.
- When asked for
your user or account name, you
must use your entire email address.
Getting Started:
If you will be using only one email account, go directly to adding
an account.
If you
will
be
using multiple email accounts, you need to know how you are
going
to set them up. There are a number of ways to do this:
- Profiles:
Profiles are user accounts that you can select
when Windows 2000/XP start. You must select your account name
and
often, enter a password before windows will load. The profile
is
usually yours alone and anyone else using the computer will normally
have their own profile. In this case, simply go to adding
an account for each profile.
- Identities:
Identities are an Outlook Express function
which, when you are in Outlook Express allow you to switch
identities. The various identities appear to be a totally
separate copy of outlook express for each user account.
Normally,
identities are used on earlier versions of Windows or on Windows
2000/XP where more than one user logs into the same profile.
Create the first account in the main identity by following the
directions in adding
an account,
then in creating a new identity. When asked if you wish to
switch
identities, select yes. Again, when you have switched to the
new
identity, following the directions in adding
an account. You
can now switch identities using the File / switch identities in Outlook
Express.
- Message
Rules: Message rules allow multiple separated email
accounts on the same profile without using identities. The
rule
would be created so that all email from account 1 goes to the inbox and
all email from account 2 goes to a separate folder. The
messages
from each account are kept separate in this maner.
We
assume that you will be setting up a
new email account in Outlook Express on a computer that does not have
an email account.
Adding
an account:
(1)
To begin, you must have Outlook express open on your desktop.
Select tools, Accounts and the accounts box will come up.
|
(2)
Select Add, then click on Mail....
|
(3)
Your display name is what people will see when you send them
email. Enter your display name in the box provided and click
Next.
|
(4)
Next, you are asked for your email address. Type it in and
click
Next.
|
(5)
The mail server is a pop3 server. The incoming mail server
name
is mail.<domain>.
Remember, the
server names are determined by the domain section of your email address.
For our example, johnsmith@sunwave.net, both server names are
mail.sunwave.net. Enter the server names in and click Next.
|
(6)
Now we enter the account name and password. The account name
is
your entire email address, not just the first part. This is
true
for any domain hosted at Suncountry Cablevision. Type in the
password that you have supplied and click Next.
|
(7)
You have completed entering the information that Outlook Express needs
to setup your email address. Click Finish.
|
(8)
You can see your new email account listed in the accounts
box.
Click Close to go back to the Outlook Express main page.
|
Click on the Send/Recv button to test. You should
get no
errors.
