File Transfer Protocol (FTP). A
standard that allows users to transfer files from one computer to
another over a network. You can use your browser to fetch files using
FTP.
The purpose of this webpage is to assist you in using Internet Explorer to FTP your web page to your personal webspace. It is not intended to show you how to design your webpage. The internet is an excellent resource for information on how to design web pages.
Personal webspace at Sun Country Cablevision Ltd. is setup from the
information in an active email address, including username and
password. Our example will be for a user who's email address is
mypage@sunwave.net. The URL for this persons Personal webspace will be
http://mypage.users.sunwave.net. A
default web page is placed in their Personal Webspace and will appear
like the one to the right. This will be overwritten when you
"upload" your webpage to your Personal Webspace.
You will probably want to have your webpage created before you try this.
To start
with, we need to establish an FTP connection to the personal
webspace. We start by entering the FTP address in the
address bar of internet explorer. For our example, look in the
address bar to the left. A dialog box like the one to the left
will pop up asking for a user name and password. The user name is
the first part of the URL and the password is the same as the password
for our example email address. Click login to open the FTP
connection.
The connection is now established. You can use the Internet
Explorer window the same as you would use Windows Explorer to copy and
paste files. Open Windows Explorer to your web page files which
you have created and stored on your computer and copy them. Then
paste them into the Internet Explorer window and they will be
transfered to the personal webspace using FTP. You can see the
default web page file below.
Some points to remember:
You can use any file name for your personal
web page but to automatically display your web page by going to your
Personal Web Space, we recomend that you call it index.html or
default.html.
Personal webspace is not automatically setup. You must contact the Webmaster to have your Personal Webspace created.
Likewise, if you wish to use Microsoft Front
Page to create your webpage, the Webmaster needs to know. Front
Page extentions are not automatically installed.
You must abide by the Acceptable Use Policy established by Sun Country Cablevision Ltd.
Personal Webspace is limited in size to 10
MB. If you exceed the size limitations, your Personal
Webspace may be removed
Personal webspace is just that. Personal. Personal Webspace may not be used for business or commercial purposes.
